Have you ever heard of the Baobab Tree?
Baobab trees are the common name for each of the nine species of tree in the genus Adansonia. Baobab trees are gigantic, with special texture and shape. People call them ‘The Tree of Life’, because they give plenty of shelter and water to other living organisms. Baobab trees mostly live in places that repeats dry and moist, humid climates. Even though the climate is hard to grow plants, Baobab Trees can grow 30 meters tall. Their width are usually 10m. It’s width has to be wide for sucking up water, as much as they can in the rainy, moist climates.
Baobab Trees can also give other plants and animals water, and feed theirselves, because they can contain 120,000 L of water. But, they contain so much water, that the stems of the trees get decomposed easily. Sometimes, old Baobab trees just collapse when they can’t support their own weight. The good thing is that they can regrow after they collapse. Some Baobab Trees have clues of the Native people, who lived inside it. Other common names for Baobab Trees are 'boab', 'boaboa', 'bottle tree', 'upside-down tree', and 'monkey bread tree'.
바오밥 나무를 아시나요?
바오밥은 아단소니아 속에 속하는 나무들을 통틀어 부르는 이름입니다. 바오밥 나무들은 크기가 크고, 모양도 특이해요. 사람들은 바오밥 나무를 ‘생명의 나무’라고 부르는데, 다른 생물들에게 쉴 곳과 물을 제공해 주기 때문입니다. 바오밥 나무들은 건기와 우기가 반복되는 곳에서 주로 삽니다. 아무리 환경이 고단해도 바오밥 나무는 너비 10m, 길이 30m까지도 자란답니다. 너비가 그렇게 큰 이유는 건기가 왔을 때를 위해 물을 많이 저장하기 위해서라고 해요.
바오밥 나무는 한번에 12만 L의 물을 저장할 수 있어요. 그 덕분에 물을 많이 먹고도 다른 생물들에게 물을 제공해 줄 수 있죠. 하지만 물을 너무 많이 흡수하는 탓에 줄기가 연하고 쉽게 썩기도 한답니다. 그래서 오래된 나무들은 무게를 버티지 못하고 쓰러지기도 하지만, 재생력이 강해 다시 살아납니다. 어떤 나무들은 부족중에 하나인 부시먼 족이 살았던 흔적을 남깁니다. 바오밥 나무는 ‘boab’, ‘boaboa’, ‘bottle tree’, ‘upside-down tree’, 와 ‘monkey tree’라고도 불린답니다.
